Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park

Group Visit Need-to-Knows

Transportation

  • To provide the best wildlife viewing, we limit vehicles in the park. Cars must park in the lot at the park entrance. Self-guided groups can access the park trails on foot. Groups participating in ranger-led programs may request a bus escort into the park. Buses allowed in must stay with the group and may not leave without an escort.

Cost

  • Regular entrance is $5 per person over 12; free for kids 12 and under. Groups with 10 or more people may qualify for a discounted rate of $3 per person with advanced notice.
  • Educational groups may apply in advance for entrance fee waivers that cover all students and one chaperone per six students. Contact us for information about eligibility and how to apply.
  • Annual and group passes are also available.
  • We don't charge for regular educational programs and ranger orientation. Special request programs may be subject to additional fees.

What to Bring

  • Water! There are no water fountains inside the park. Groups should bring a sufficient supply of drinking water.
  • Bug spray and sunscreen
  • Weather-appropriate clothing, hats, and closed-toed shoes (please, no sandals or flip-flops)
  • Snacks and/or lunch
  • Student medications including allergy medications such as EpiPens.

Facilities

  • Bathrooms are located at headquarters, near the group pavilion, on the inner loop near the campgrounds, and at the Nature Center (when open).
  • The park gift shop is at headquarters. Only 25 students are allowed in at a time.
  • An air-conditioned Group Hall in the headquarters area is available for rent.

Teachers and Chaperones

  • We require a minimum of one teacher or chaperone per 10 students.
  • We expect chaperones to help with classroom management.
  • Members of the group must arrive together and remain together at all times.

Time Management and Planning

  • Allow enough time before your program to find the park and to take care of needs such as bathroom breaks. Consider after-program options such as free time, a visit to the park store, etc.

Inclement Weather Planning

  • Discuss alternate dates or activities in the event of bad weather. Changes or cancellations to the program will be made jointly between the group and park staff.
