Action
Acceptance of Donation of Land – Bastrop County
Approximately 5 Acres at Bastrop State Park
January 23, 2020

I.      Executive Summary: The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) has been offered approximately 5 hilltop acres adjacent to Bastrop State Park (SP) from a willing donor.

II.     Discussion Bastrop SP consists of approximately 6,600 acres in central Bastrop County and protects a significant example of the Lost Pines ecosystem of Texas. It is located 32 miles southeast of Austin. The state acquired the core of the park in 1933-1935 by deeds from private owners and the City of Bastrop. The Civilian Conservation Corps constructed the earliest park facilities in the 1930s. Bastrop SP is an extremely popular Central Texas destination for hiking, birding, and camping.

The TPWD staff has been working with adjacent landowners to acquire land adjacent to the park to protect habitat and viewshed.  The staff was approached by the owner of a five-acre hilltop homesite that was burned during the 2011 fires.  There are no improvements left on the subject tract after the fires, and the willing donor would like the subject tract to become part of the state park. This proposed donation is adjacent to an existing trail, would offer scenic views of the surrounding park, and would also add an opportunity to expand the park’s recreational trail system.

III.   Recommendation:  The staff recommends the Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission adopt the following motion:

“The Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission authorizes the Executive Director to take all necessary steps to accept the donation of approximately five acres in Bastrop County for addition to Bastrop State Park.”
