Acceptance of Land Donation – Jefferson County
Approximately 388 Acres at Sea Rim State Park
August 25, 2016
I. Executive Summary: Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) has been offered approximately 388 acres of land adjacent to Sea Rim State Park in Jefferson County.
II. Discussion: Sea Rim State Park was acquired in 1972 and currently consists of 4,141 acres of coastal habitats including tidal bayous, salt meadows, marshes, lagoons, dunes, and 5.5 miles of Gulf-front beach. It lies in the heart of the Chenier Plain ecosystem, adjacent to both the J.D. Murphree Wildlife Management Area and the McFaddin National Wildlife Refuges. Most of the Chenier Plain in Texas is now in conservation. TPWD and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service have worked cooperatively for decades on the goal of restoring and conserving as much of the Chenier Plain as possible. The Salt Bayou Watershed Restoration Plan is an example of that collaboration.
A landowner with a tract of approximately 388 acres, consisting of salt meadow and marsh, having 1.3 miles of boundary in common with the state park, has offered to donate the tract to TPWD.
III. Recommendation: The staff recommends the Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission adopt the following motion:
“The Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission authorizes the Executive Director to take all necessary steps to accept the donation of approximately 388 acres of land for addition to Sea Rim State Park in Jefferson County.”
