Longhorn Cavern State Park Tucked away in the Texas hill country, Longhorn Cavern is a hidden gem ready to be explored. This unique river formed caved has been home to an underground restaurant, concert hall, and a fallout shelter. Experience the magnificent geology and hear some of the amazing tales from Texas history surrounding the cave all on a walking tour 365 days a year. Shorebird Survival Texas shorebirds are in trouble. From the endangered piping plover to the threatened snowy plover, shorebirds in Texas continue to lose habitat as beach development booms. Follow along with some biologists as they work to save these struggling shorebirds. Surfing the Sands of Monahans Sun, sand, and surfing are not just found at the beach. Visit Monahans Sandhills State Park near Midland-Odessa and surf, slide, or tumble down the dunes for some family fun. Unfortunately over the years, some of the pictographs have been damaged by graffiti. But now a new type of laser technology is about to turn back time. It’s a laser light show that wipes away the graffiti but doesn’t affect the pictograph underneath. Tune in to see as Hueco Tanks rock art is reborn. Lake Mineral Wells State Park The waters of Mineral Wells, west of Fort Worth, have long lured visitors.  Relaxation at a lakeside state park is more the draw than the historic spas today, but entertaining exercise is also an option. Managing the Martins Meet some landlords looking out for their tenants at a small high-rise condo complex that’s completely for the birds. Purple martins seem to need people, and the birds provide some rewards for those who watch out for them. Goliad Illumination Once a year, visitors to Goliad State Park & Historic Site can witness what is known as “The Illumination.” The Franciscan missionaries designed Mission Espiritu Santo so that on April 16th, the setting sun would shine through a window on the west end of the building and illuminate the crucifix in the east end of the chapel. From coastal fishing, to crabbing, to kayaking the marshland, Sea Rim State Park has something for everyone. 112 Million Years in the Making Researchers study the hidden lives of Texas dinosaurs through the use of both cutting-edge technology and old-fashioned scientific method through the analysis of their prehistoric tracks. Dinosaur Valley State Park has some of the best preserved dinosaur tracks in the world, and this group is working to keep it that way. Habitat loss has made it especially tough on several species of sparrows. Research is underway from Canada to Mexico to find out how to save the disappearing grasslands and the tiny songbirds that call them home. Fort Boggy State Park Visit a park on the edge of East Texas where families find water, woods, and wildlife, along with primitive camping and some rather fancy new cabins. Water for Wildlife, and the Pictures to Prove It In the middle of a desert, along the Rio Grande River, in the middle of nowhere, is Black Gap Wildlife Management Area. It’s here that you can find a surprising wealth of wildlife such as deer, bear, quail, mountain lion and desert bighorn sheep. But without water, none of these animals could exist here. So biologists build and maintain water catchment devises called guzzlers to help the wildlife. With the aid of game cameras, it’s amazing to see the variety of animals that benefit from the guzzlers. Shot in the Dark Follow landscape photographer Mike Mezeul II through Big Bend as he leads a nighttime photography workshop.  Join the students as they learn to capture the Milky Way in the darkest night sky in Texas. Parks & Wildlife People: Paul Daugherty Texas Game Wardens often have a difficult time showing oyster harvesters where they can and cannot legally harvest the delectable Gulf food. Paul Daugherty went to work on the problem and wrote an App that solved the problem. Kickapoo Cavern State Park Bats, birds and caverns are what you’ll find at this secluded state park.  Located north of Del Rio, you can experience the flight of the Mexican free-tailed bat, have a guided cavern tour to see the largest column formation in Texas, and possibly see the endangered golden-cheeked warbler while exploring the park. The Devils River proved to be a bit of a challenge. El Paso Envoy A day in El Paso might include empanadas, bouldering, ancient legends, and a happy-hour hike. Join Hueco Tanks State Park & Historic Site ambassador Clara Cobb doing her favorite activities. Sea Center Stocking Sea Center Texas is the largest redfish hatchery in the world. Now biologists hope to replicate that success with spotted seatrout. Reclaiming the River See how some technical guidance and a lot of teamwork can transform an old mine site and mud pit along the Colorado River into an asset for a town and its wildlife. Deepening a community’s connection to its river pays dividends in Bastrop. Lockhart State Park Lockhart State Park was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps back in the 1930s. Along with numerous buildings, roads, and bridges, the men and women of the CCC also built a swimming pool that utilizes the spring water coming from a nearby creek. More recently, a nine-hole golf course was added. Postcard From Texas It is hard to explain the wild flowers that one gardener calls weeds, and another considers beautiful ground cover. Their seeds blow in the wind and they find a new place to grow, they grow wherever they want, just like these wildflowers on the Duval County Ranch.

Lone Star Land Steward: Vacek Family Farm By keeping their Central Texas farm in agriculture for more than a century, Rick Castello and the Vacek family honor their heritage. By restoring native grasses, rotating cattle, and conserving land in perpetuity, they also secure their farm’s future and improve water quality for all who live downstream. A New North Deer North Deer Island near Galveston is the largest bird rookery island on the Upper Texas Coast, and it is shrinking. Erosion from waves has pounded the island for years. See what’s being done to preserve this island and protect it for the thousands of birds that nest here every year. Choke Canyon State Park If you like catfish, then this is a park you have to visit. The 26,000-acre Choke Canyon Reservoir is a catfishing haven, and is really good for bass fishing as well. Birders love the hiking trails and the large numbers and varieties of birds attracted to the water and upland habitats, including many Mexican species of birds. Lone Star Land Steward: Lochridge Ranch The overriding management goal for the Cox family with Lochridge Ranch in Henderson and Anderson counties is to enhance and conserve the native ecosystem while maximizing the health, welfare and productivity of the local flora and fauna. Today’s ranch is a far cry from the landscape that existed 50 years ago. Wetlands have been restored, upland timber thinned and burned, bottomland hardwoods reestablished, and fish and wildlife populations have responded accordingly. Lyndon B. Johnson State Park & Historic Site The Lyndon Baines Johnson State Park and Historic Site is all about history, from the visitor center honoring our country’s thirty-sixth president … to a living-history farm depicting life on the farmstead as it was back in 1918, when President Johnson was a young boy. On the Right Track Follow along as biologists track Whooping Cranes at the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge. Using satellite GPS technology, the team hopes to help protect this endangered species. The Last Dance Historically there used to be one million Attwater’s prairie-chickens throughout the coastal prairies of Texas and Louisiana, now less than one percent remain. We follow along as biologists deal with one of the toughest breeding seasons on record, as they struggle to save one of the most endangered birds in all of Texas. But oil and gas production can threaten the spring, placing its endangered species at more risk. Teaming with universities, local citizens, federal conservation groups, and the oil and gas companies themselves, Chad Norris is working to save the springs. Flocking With Friends A Classic Competition from the Coast is now statewide and open to all. How many different birds can be seen in a day, a morning, or from just one spot? The Birdman of East Texas Ever wonder what that brilliantly blue bird is in your backyard or how to make hummingbird food? Just ask state ornithologist Cliff Shackelford on Red River Radio during his call in show, “Bird Calls.” The hour-long call-in show airs every month and reaches four states answering questions, giving tips and providing conservation methods about the avian species. Parks & Wildlife People: Rick Torres One of Rick Torres’ passions is leading families on night hikes at Ray Roberts Lake State Park. Rick is able to reach visitors who would not otherwise be exposed to the natural, nocturnal world. An Office in the Ocean Exploring the depths of Texas’ artificial reefs, documenting species of fish and coral, and monitoring the health of our reefs, these are all in a day’s work for Dr. Brooke Shipley and Chris Ledford of the TPWD Artificial Reef Program. These two are fortunate enough to make the undersea world of the Gulf of Mexico their office. The Volunteer Family With two teens and a toddler, the Gibson family has a hectic schedule. But every year they squeeze in time to volunteer at the Texas Coastal Expo. Mom, dad and the kids all pitch in to help other families learn about the natural world. In return, the Gibsons say they’ve learned a lot about themselves. Crazy Ants Invade Some new invasive ants are driving biologists crazy, but new research into control methods is underway at the lab and in the field. Birdwatching and the Guide to Immortality Victor Emanuel entered the birding world when, as a boy, he joined a small ornithology club in Houston. That was over seventy years ago, and since, he’s been chasing birds over the world. Considered one of the preeminent birders anywhere, he has been an inspiration to tens of thousands of people. And even today, he’s helping prep a new generation of naturalists that will solidify his legacy long after he puts down his binoculars. Lone Star Land Steward: The Pigfoot Ranch The story of the Pigfoot Ranch is not one of stark before and after, but rather of a long-time legacy of excellent land stewardship. Dating back to 1885, the Head Family has worked to preserve Pigfoot’s pristine native prairie savannahs and its crystal-clear creeks.
