Lizards on the Move For generations, Texans grew up seeing Texas Horned Lizards throughout much of the state. Today the threatened lizards are common only in certain spots, but research at the Muse Wildlife Management Area is investigating how lizards fare and where they go when they are relocated to restored habitat. Bucking the trends of fragmentation and non-native invasive grasses, the Laborcitas Creek Ranch is adding acreage and diligently restoring native habitat to benefit diverse wildlife, from game animals to waterfowl and more. Mobile Storytellers The ancient art of storytelling gets a new twist when a group of students attempt to tell the story of Garner State Park using nothing but their phones. Copperhead Country A slithery copperhead sliding around your backyard is just about the last thing you would want to run into. Well imagine hundreds of them coming out, as you have a copperhead honey hole of sorts. That’s exactly what’s happening to one Texas landowner. The Business of Burning Prescribed fires by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department are carefully planned events conducted by a specially trained and skilled crew. The Trailer Camera Camera technology has changed the way people take pictures, but one Texas artist likes to capture images the old way. Ian Kasnoff has turned a 16-foot long trailer into a camera, complete with darkroom. Follow Ian as he documents some Texas state parks with his travelling trailer camera. A Return Home The official state fish, the Guadalupe Bass, has been restored to the South Llano River. Threatened by loss of habitat and hybridization with non-native, introduced Smallmouth Bass, the Guadalupe Bass was close to being wiped out. We’ll learn what happened and how biologists figured out how to restore the Texas native back to the South Llano River. Goliad Illumination Once a year, visitors to Goliad State Park & Historic Site can witness what is known as “The Illumination.” The Franciscan missionaries designed Mission Espiritu Santo so that on April 16th, the setting sun would shine through a window on the west end of the building, and illuminate the crucifix in the east end of the chapel. Austin’s Warblers In the heart of the hill country is the Balcones Canyonlands Preserve, and here you will find the endangered Golden-cheeked Warbler. There’s a lot to do here no matter you primary interest. Owls Underground Some owls in El Paso have a fancy new home, complete with a surveillance system, which gives biologists a bird’s-eye view of owl life. Parks & Wildlife People: Brenda Bowling Brenda Bowling just can't stop herself from identifying marine animals. She collected such a large database of information that she created an interactive website called “Identification Guide to Marine Organisms of Texas” with over 2,000 photographs. The Volunteer Family With two teens and a toddler, the Gibson family has a hectic schedule. But every year they squeeze in time to volunteer at the Texas Coastal Expo. Mom, dad and the kids all pitch in to help other families learn about the natural world. In return, the Gibsons say they’ve learned a lot about themselves. Because of his research and coordination with other agencies and groups, the turkeys are gobbling again in the piney woods. Managing the Martins Meet some landlords looking out for their tenants at a small high-rise condo complex that’s completely for the birds. The State of Quail Texas has long been known for its robust quail populations, but habitat loss has impacted all four quail species in the state. Though their homes range from desert floodplain and brush land to prairie grasslands, these quail species need native habitat to thrive. Find out how researchers, non-profits, and landowners and managers are working together to keep quail numbers healthy statewide. Lake Arrowhead State Park Close to the Red River in both location and hue, this North Texas park offers family fun and fine fishing. Traversing the Trinity Grab a paddle and hit the river, wherever you live there is a paddling trail nearby. For folks in Dallas there’s one right in the heart of the city. Wildlife managers Bonnie and Billy Pat McKinney are busy restoring this precious piece of Chihuahuan Desert. Parrot People Bird-enthusiasts in the Rio Grande Valley are turning their attention to a bird with a strong personality about which researchers know very little: the Red-Crowned Parrot. Threatened by habitat loss and the pet trade, the Red-Crowned Parrot has moved to the cities of south Texas, while researchers and volunteers are just now learning the basics about this quirky bird. See how biologists gather information about the lives of desert bighorn sheep as they move the through the mountains of west Texas and Mexico, and the endangered Kemp’s Ridley Sea Turtle as they travel the Gulf of Mexico. Sheldon Lake State Park & Environmental Learning Center Sheldon Lake State Park & Environmental Learning Center is a 2,800 acre park that has been surrounded by development over the past fifty years. Today, the park boasts a diverse habitat, including prairie, marsh, and woods. It’s an oasis for both wildlife and people, just minutes from Downtown Houston. The Last Stand The pristine coastal prairie landscape is disappearing at a rapid rate in Texas. Once covering millions of acres, less than a tenth of a percent of the original prairie remains. But there is a movement underway to turn things around. Meet some of these prairie patriots who are working to restore coastal prairies back to Texas. Guarding the Nest Boaters are asked to stay clear of rookery islands during water-birds nesting season along the coast. Biologists say it only takes two minutes for an abandoned egg to cook in the Texas sun or a newborn chick to parish in the heat or be left to predation. They skewer their meals on barbed wire or thorns for easy eating. Some Shrikes have also found a nice nesting place in a busy Round Rock, Texas park. San Jacinto Battleground State Historic Site On April 21, 1836, Texas won its independence when an outnumbered Texan Army defeated Mexican forces on the plains of San Jacinto. The Monument built in remembrance of the battle stands on the flat Texas wetlands along the Houston ship channel. It is one of the most recognizable symbols of the history of Texas – a soaring monument to commemorate a small battle with huge consequences.  Betting on Butterflies Some fragile flying insects bring beauty and business to Texas each year.
