Texas City Nature Challenge
2024 Results
Congratulations to all 2024 City Nature Challenge participating cities and metro areas for another successful year of citizen science contribution! A total of 7,404 participants logged 222,670 observations of 8,605 species, representing new records and increases of 27.6%, 14.2% and 19.3% increases over 2023 (as of 6.25.2024). This included 183 species of greatest conservation need, 72 new species records in iNaturalist and a 2% increase in iNaturalist observations for all of Texas.
Looking Ahead to the 2025 City Nature Challenge
If you are interested in your city participating in the 2025 City Nature Challenge, you can register on the City Nature Challenge website. Dates will be announced soon, but you can anticipate Friday to Monday, April 25 to 28, 2025. Organizer meetings will begin in September 2024.
Please reach out to our Texas Nature Trackers staff at tracker@tpwd.texas.gov for information about our efforts across Texas and for help getting your city involved in 2025.
With the iNaturalist App, you just take a picture of a plant or animal and the community will help identify what species it is.
Any observation made during the four days of the event in the greater metropolitan area of each city will count towards the challenge.
You can participate by exploring the life in your backyard, in your local park or on a field trip with your local naturalist group.
